Non-Profit Administrators are Heading to the For-Profit Sector

Amidst recent controversy over recruiting practices and poor job placement, for-profit education institutions have begun to recruit non-profit administrators in an effort to influence what can be a predatory, misleading admissions culture. The intent is to demonstrate to Washington and critics in general that there are many positive similarities between for- and non-profit schools, and that for-profits offer accessibility and opportunity to students who may be unable to enter a traditional non-profit.

The U.S. Department of Education Awards $20 Million to Improve and Expand College Access

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded 6 high schools in Erie, Pa. and Louisville, Ky. with a $20 million grant to fund the cities’ low income, first generation, and minority students and expand access to higher education.

Are We Spending Too Much on Higher Education?

Education reformists are calling for increased government spending for education reform. But Lauren Kelley, a writer for AlterNet, has a different idea. In fact, Kelley thinks that way too much is being spent on education. 17 million college graduates in the United States have completed their degree only to find a job “that requires a skill level below that of a bachelor’s degree.”

Investment in National Science, Math Programs Needed

The National Academies, an organization which advises the federal government on science, engineering, and medicine, recently released a report which found the United States ranks 27th out of 29 countries for per capita number of college graduates with science or engineering degrees. Similarly, the World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. 48th of 133 nations in math and science instruction quality.

One Writer Argues for an E-Book Rental Plan

For E-Books to be successful, argues Wired contributor Chris Suellentrop, they must be rentable. One of the most criticized aspects of E-Books is the inability to share or send downloaded books to friends as readers often do with paper copies.

Critics Stall Implementation of Gainful Employment Regulations

The U.S. Department of Education recently announced that it would be moving forward as scheduled with its regulations on the for-profit education sector. However, part of the government regulations, referred to as “gainful employment regulations,” are being put on hold in response to increasing public outcry.

The New American Job: Hybrid Careers

As a child, John Halamka was passionate about science and electronics. In 4th grade, he presented a home-built Van de Graff generator at his school science fair and took home first place honors. Fast forward 30 some years, and Halamka, now Dr. Halamka is the chief information officer at Harvard medicine school. Dr. Halamka is not only the acting CIO, but is also a practicing emergency-ward physician and electronic health records advisor for the Obama administration.

Public Meeting to be Held on Gainful Employment Regulations

The U.S. Department of Education is slated to hold public meetings in early November concerning the controversial gainful employment regulations. The meetings will be held so that individuals and groups who submitted comments (over 90,000 were received) will have the chance to present “oral presentations and answer questions posed to them by department employees.”

Hispanic Education Gap is Narrowing

The release of a new study which details the narrowing of educational achievement gaps amongst Hispanic students coincides with the recently held Presidential summit on Hispanic Education Achievement. The study, released a day after President Obama signed an executive order to improve the education of Hispanic Americans, shows that the Hispanic education gap is, slowly but surely, beginning to even out.
