Several accredited schools online are taking precautions to prevent students from cheating. As the popularity of online education continues to grow, regrettably so does the ease with which cheating in online courses goes undetected. The convenience of learning without ever setting foot in a classroom or meeting an instructor also gives students increased opportunities to cheat without getting caught.

It seems like a paradox; corporate profits are on the rise again while the average American is still struggling to make ends meet. The year 2010 saw some of the biggest earnings to date for some Wall Street banks and other corporations. Despite these earnings, the same companies are hesitant to invest again while the economy is still unpredictable.

In a stunning, but not unexpected move, Mayor Angel Taveras of Providence, Rhode Island has sent layoff notices to 1,926 teachers – all the teachers in the city. While not every one of them will be dismissed, under state law all teachers need to be notified before March 1, long before the start of the new school year. This warning system “gives [the school district] the freedom to let go many of them later without having to single any of them out now.”

Amidst a nursing shortage, nursing schools are being forced to reduce student enrollment due to budget limitations. Colleges and universities across the country are facing state budget cuts, which unfortunately force them to raise student tuition and limit program offerings. Cuts to nursing programs inconveniently come “amid a time of increased demand for nurses—a need that has only rise with the passing of health care reform, and an aging Baby Boomer population and nursing workforce.”

College-entrance exams are a major source of stress for high school students, as well as their parents. But outside research is increasingly showing that for many students, studying online independently may be more beneficial than expensive, one-on-one tutoring sessions and classes.
